I have acute and chronic MR images from a group of stroke patients aged 50 to 90 years. I will identify imaging studies in the ADNI database from normal individuals in the same age range as the stroke patients. Three-dimensional T1-weighted volume images from these studies will be retrieved from the ADNI database and these will be used to formulate a probabilistic normal structure atlas from a group of individuals that is age matched to the population of stroke patients. The age matched normal structure atlas will be used as template. FLAIR, DWI and perfusion images from the stroke patients will be aligned to this template to identify the location and size of stroke-associated lesions apparent on these types of images in the template space. This will permit the construction of a set of atlases that define the probabilistic neuroanatomic representation of the NIH Stroke Scale, which is a standard clinical instrument used to assess stroke severity and clinical features in individual patients. It is also conceivable that some of the age matched ADNI image sets may include a FLAIR or DTI image set, which could be used to create template atlases that have similar contrast properties to the images obtained from the stroke patients.
