ADNI Data Use

Introduction

Through this web site, qualified scientists may obtain access to imaging (MRI and PET), clinical and biomarker data obtained as part of the ADNI project.  The ADNI is a multisite, multiyear program which began in October 2004.  Patient enrollment began in late Summer of 2005, and is expected to continue until the Fall of 2007.  Approximately 800 subjects will be recruited, 200 elderly controls, 400 with mild cognitive impairment and 200 with Alzheimer's disease.  Subjects will be followed for 2-3 years and will be seen approximately every 6 months. All data are de-identified to protect patient privacy.

Prospective investigators must submit an on-line application to request access to the ADNI data.  As part of the application process, investigators are required to provide information about proposed research plans and agree to the ADNI data sharing and publication policies. Applications are reviewed by the Data Publication and Sharing Committee within one week of receipt.

Data Availability

The entire clinical database and thousands of raw and processed MRI and PET images are already available for those subjects recruited to-date. Please read about the image data to learn more.

Over the next several years a vast amount of information will be available through this web site and we expect to provide increasingly more powerful and user-friendly tools. As new data and/or tools become available, or as other developments occur, information will be posted on the ADNI Billboard. Any investigators utilizing the ADNI data are encouraged to regularly check this site for new information.

A Note from Dr. Michael Weiner
I  want to take a moment to share my enthusiasm for this endeavor.  The ADNI is the largest single project ever devoted to Alzheimer's Disease.  We appreciate the many patients who are devoting their time to volunteer as participants and the hundreds of individuals from the NIH to universities, to industry who are heavily involved with the success of this project.  The ADNI is one of the largest public-private partnerships which has ever been attempted in health care research.  Our providing data to the entire research community is unprecedented.

In summary, this is a high-impact project in which we are attempting to do many novel things.  Please bear with us as we progress.
