UCLA researchers have a strong interest in Alzheimer's disease. For example, in 2004, UCLA's Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) began compiling all the data regarding the biology of individuals with Alzheimer's disease that was generated by the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). ADNI is an ambitious, worldwide effort by scientists to define the progression of Alzheimer?s disease. On July 2 [2012], UCLA Health System announced that the effort has been expanded to include the genome sequencing of the more than 800 individuals enrolled in ADNI. This information, which encompasses 165 terabytes (a trillion bytes) of new genetic data, will be absorbed, organized, and disseminated by LONI.
"This effort, involving almost 60 sites around the country, is the best chance we have in understanding this brutal disease," noted Arthur Toga, professor of neurology, director of the LONI, and one of the collaborators on managing the sequencing efforts. He added, "We collect vast amounts of imaging, cognitive and bio-sample data from hundreds of subjects with Alzheimer's Disease, those at risk and controls. One of the more unique aspects of this study is that all data are shared with any scientist without embargo. We have already engaged many scientists around the world with this open access."
