• The general message I was trying to communicate in last Tuesday's meeting was that the following are all highly inter-related:

1. SRB use - both as a means to access & create shared data and a means for sharing data descriptions (or meta data);
2. Conceptual Global Schema/Mediator Registration and/or distal repository discovery;
3. Mediated data access - by the BIRN Mediator, of course - as opposed to code we'd write de novo in a pipeline framework or in MBAT;
4. Ontology use for describing data;
5. XCEDE use for distributing data descriptions in a federated manner (think the Keator-Buckholtz XCEDE web service responding to MBAT queries);
6. Distributed workflow scenarios using SRB & the Mediator during data I/O, both for:
   • a single run of an algorithmic chain ("pipeline") [e.g., in your local computational environment, 1 of 5 algorithmic steps takes 20 hours, while all others take < 40 minutes total, so you'd like to send the 20 hour step to the "GRID" were it can be run in 20 minutes, thus increasing your pipeline execution throughput from 1/day to 24/day];
   • a chain of pipeline runs being executed at different sites;
7. MBAT use of SRB, the mediator, and XCEDE
   • as I intimate above, one could envision posing an ontology-based query via the mediator web service framework (e.g., "find data related to this BRAIN REGION, CELL TYPE, and PROTEIN");
   • the mediator might then do the following:
     • return a SRB location(s) pointing to each of the data sets in the query result;
     • somehow prompt the XCEDE web service to return the "light weight" description of these data sets.
   • MBAT logic could then either automatically decide what data to retrieve by analyzing the XCEDE results, or present them in some coherent results form for the user to choose what she wants;
   • MBAT would then call Jargon to retrieve the data with the SRB ids returned by Mediator;
