CCB Shape Tools Program - 10 August 2005

Agenda

Discussed

  • Should we distribute the next release of the viewer yet
  • Viewer shows surfaces in more detail than prev. viewers. They look odd because of this.
  • Slow loading on a Macintosh
  • Cornelius may not have time to represent ShapeViewer
  • Review of geometry tools - Summary - only one might be useful (JavaView) but it may not be freely redistributed.
  • JavaView and jVisual3D do not require java3d & so should work on an SGI.
  • Support of alternate viewer frameworks by ShapeViewer (Jeff likes JavaView)
  • Usefulness of having an easily used viewer that can be called from library code.
  • definition and use of implicit surfaces (a 3d grid of numbers).
  • problems loading a 'diamond ucf'.
  • next file format to support might be DXF.
  • far future wish list: implement a java SSH based remote filesystem browser.

Decisions

  • don't distribute ShapeViewer until bugs and features are complete, and tested.
  • complete java3d version of viewer before considering support for other viewer frameworks.
  • R Interface - no change since last meeting.

Java library Reviews

JavaView A standalone application. no clearly evident separable library. Documentation & Source describes use of application (viewer), not library. - cs.

Good, but not freely distributable - qma

Jvisual3d Includes Gui , little or no geometry operations, mostly different object types -cs.

Too simple -qma

Jmath Project has not released any files - cs.

JGV An applet with simple shape classes. Possibly useful to Jeff, otherwise much to simple -cs

To Do for Next Week
