The BIRN currently consists of three "test bed" projects that are conducting structural and functional studies of neurological disease:

• Mouse BIRN - studying animal models of Neurological disorder. (BIRN mouse site, UCLA mouse BIRN site)
• Function BIRN - studying regional brain dysfunctions related to the progression and treatment of schizophrenia.(Function BIRN wiki)
• Morphometry BIRN - examining unipolar depression, mild Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. (Morphometry BIRN wiki)
• These test beds are connected by networking and software infrastructure co-developed with the BIRN Central Coordinating site (BIRN-CC).

Partner Institutions in Mouse BIRN

Mouse BIRN integrates activities of five laboratories:

• The MRI Center in the Biological Imaging Center (BIC) at the California Institute of Technology (CIT)
• The Center for In Vivo Microscopy (CIVM) at Duke University
• The Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)
• The National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD)
• The Informatics Center for Mouse Neurogenetics at UTHSC, Drexel, and BIDMC (Mouse Brain Library and The GeneNetwork)
