Using XCEDE, SRB, Portlet UI to augment workflow automation

Overview

The research groups within the Mouse BIRN testbed have done a significant amount of effective collaborative research, but, to date, there has only been minimal use of the augmentation technology the BIRN infrastructure can provide to greatly automate the process of sharing data and hosting collaborative, cross-lab image processing & analysis pipelined workflows.

To that end, members of the CalTech, Duke, UCLA, & UCSD labs are going to assemble the images and associated data generated during a previous collaborative project, so as to determine how best to use XCEDE, SRB, and an existing Portlet (FBIRN QA Portlet) to provide a much more efficient means of passing images and associated local repository data amongst labs to drive a semi-automatic collaborative workflow.

Goals

The overall goal is for each group in a collaborative chained workflow to determine:

1. what images and associated data [raw, provenance, analysis, etc.] they required as input to the tasks they ran locally.
2. what images and associated data [raw, provenance, analysis, etc.] they produced as output from the tasks they ran locally.
3. what the Portlet template should be doing to help expedite collaborative, cross-site workflow execution.
4. build a better mousetrap.
5. save the world through neuroinformatics.

Tasks

Once determined, each group will then:

1. XCEDE:
   1. determine how best to map local data to XCEDE and to semi-automatically generate the required XCEDE instances (see Mouse XCEDE Working page).
2. SRB:
   1. determine what the appropriate location in SRB would be.
   2. determine how best to semi-autmatically send the required images & XCEDE instances to the appropriate location in SRB
3. QA Portlet:
   1. determine how the Portlet will find the images & XCEDE instance
   2. determine how the Portlet should display the info
   3. determine what the Portlet should do with both the data & images to help expedite the worklow process (workflow requirements for the Portlet)
