The GIFT OF HOPE ANATOMICAL DONOR PROGRAM helps interested persons and their families arrange to enroll as Donor Members prior to death. This facilitates donation at the time of death. It is recommended that one enroll prior to death but it is not required. Unlike general anatomical gift programs, the Center offers the donor the opportunity to aid research in the disease they are afflicted with. Hundreds of scientific articles have been published as a result of research using donor specimens. Very active research is now in progress in the areas of chemical imbalances and deficiencies, genetics, autoimmunity and viral infections.
Why might a person choose to become an organ donor for research? Some individuals suffering from a neurological disorder, might like the opportunity to aid research that will help others with the same condition. This desire to help others especially applies to those with inherited neurological disorders. People with inherited disorders frequently want to help researchers find new ways of preventing or treating the disease so that their children or grandchildren may be spared. Another benefit of organ donation is that, upon request, the family will receive a copy of the microscopic examination of the donated tissue which will confirm or negate the clinical diagnosis. In the case of inherited disorders, this information can be very important to family members.
There is no substitute for the personal donations from individuals and families committed to this research. There can be no more sincere or valuable gift to mankind. It is our hope that these gifts will come in time to help the thousands of stricken -- and yet to be stricken -- men, women and children who wait for the discoveries that scientists are relentlessly working to find.
Your participation in the Gift of Hope Brain Donation Program will help advance human research which could lead to diagnostic markers for early detection, treatments and possible cures for individuals suffering from neurological and psychiatric disorders.
