Summary:

Early in the progression of neurodegenerative diseases neuroanatomical changes may be too mild, diffuse, or topologically complex to be detected by simple visual inspection. Computerised methods are being developed that use mathematical models to detect these subtle changes. In this review, we describe the strengths and limitations of existing computer-assisted tools and predict which approaches are likely to have the most clinical and research use in the future.
