New MRT method for recognition of
Alzheimer
Dr. Paul Thompson from Los
Angeles developed a new method for the evaluation of MRT
pictures. The researchers recognized from the pictures of
twelve patients that neurons from the rear regions of the
brain are affected by the illness at first. Those are
responsible for memories. After longer time the areas which
are responsible for the emotions and behavior are
destroyed.

Adaptive Optics in Medicine
Adaptive optics now is used in the optometry in
order to see the flowing white blood corpuscles in the retina
capillaries. This technology originated from the
telescopes. The irregularities in the eye are grasped with
a laser. A sensor registers the signals and forwards them
to a computer program. Nevertheless, the quality of the
eyes as well as the tear liquid form a first obstacle.

Sensor
Chip Reasearch Receives Award
A sensor chip for
the electronic determination of DNA received the "Jack Raper
Award for Outstanding Technology Directions Paper" in Berlin.
The DNA analysis works with help of a silicon chip through
an electro-chemical reaction. The chip was developed by
researchers of the Fraunhofer Institutes and four business
companies. It shall represent a fast, disturbance-free and
automatic analysis in hospitals and for physicians. The
research cooperation attributes to the promotion initiative
called "SIBANAT" of the federal ministry for education and
research.

50th Birthday of the DNA Double
Helix
On February 28th 1953 James
Watson and Francis Crick decoded the structure of
the DNA molekule. It should be the most important discovery in
the last century. The Newspaper "Die Zeit"
published a series of articles about the history of that break
through discovery.

Implanting Fetal Retina Improves the Eyesight
Dr. Robert Aramant and his co-workers of the
Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles reported from a new
attempt to implant the tissue from a layer retina cells and a
layer epithel cells from an aborted human fetus. Patients
with the hereditary disease Retinitis Pigmentosa could
hardly see previously. Two of the patients can already
recognize face contours.

Changed Genotype in Human Stem Cells
American researchers announced that they have changed
the heritable information of embryonic stem cells of the human
being by genetic engineering. They can breed up to 200
different cells for the human organism from embryonic stem
cells. One hopes to breed substitute tissue from these
cells for defective organs.

RNA
filaments useful for the physical work
Dr.
Guo and his colleague of the Purdue University in West
Lafayette, Indiana/USA, succeeded in joining ATP molecules
with RNA strands.

The goal of that research is developing a
nanomotor. The RNA strands serve as propeller wings. The motor
is run by the energy that is set free by the ATP when
splitting a bond.
