Two views from MRI
scans of the brain of an Alzheimer's patient shows the
progressive loss of brain cells. The new scans from an
international group of researchers charted a 5 percent
annual loss of brain cells in Alzheimer's patients and
up to 10 percent loss in key memory areas. In contrast,
healthy volunteers monitored in the study lost less than
1 percent of their brain cells a year. Writing in the
Journal of Neuroscience February 6, 2003, the
researchers said their findings would help doctors check
to see if treatments are helping, and perhaps help chart
the course of the disease. (Paul Thompson, UCLA-School
